Shiatsu is a form of traditional Japanese massage. We use the same map of the body as acupuncturists but we treat with hands rather than needles (the Japanese word shiatsu translates as "finger pressure"). Shiatsu can treat purely physical problems - eg a difficult shoulder or a knee injury, or it can work on a more emotional level. The focus will depend on what you want or need at that particular time.
Ellie practices Zen Shiatsu. In this style, the treatment usually begins with a diagnosis of the "hara" (belly). As reflexology has a map of the body on the foot, so shiatsu has one on the hara. There will be two lines of the body which are out of sync with one another which the practitioner then works to bring back into balance. Specific problems or discomfort can also be addressed within a treatment.
A member of the Shiatsu Society, Ellie trained at the Shiatsu College in London. She is available for treatments at Eastern Garden on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays.

Testimonials
I didn't know anything about shiatsu before coming to Ellie, but after doing yoga with her and mentioning some health problems she recommended it to me. I have had shiatsu from Ellie on and off for about a year. Sometimes a session just helps me calm down after a stressful week, other times I've had several sessions to successfully tackle an ongoing health problem. I would - and have - recommended Ellie’s bodywork to friends and family and think it's a insightful and rewarding treatment for many different problems.

The yoga I have been practicing with Ellie for the last 8 months has made a big contribution to my increased performance this year, helping to build my flexibility and core strength to maintain a stronger position and hold it for longer; this means that I can direct my strength to move the boat, lift the weight or drive the erg handle with decreased fatigue. In summary, I believe doing yoga with Ellie has resulted in an increase in the benefit I see from the rest of my training.
